Flagging is an extension of a dancing art form, visually conveying the heart and soul of the music, and an in the moment spiritually empowering experience, without the edited thought process.
The very colorful tie die & fabric flags and the glamorously decorated fans under black light is a mesmerizing eye candy experience for the club goers, and the performers are local celebrities.
Flow Affair is a historic art documentary about the New York City and San Francisco Flow Arts Dance sub-culture, a gay Greenwich Village dance tradition with its pre-flagging tribal roots at the sleazy Anvil and Crisco Disco leather bars. They were waving their handkerchiefs and t-shirts up in the air to the disco music and all the freaks and craziness was all part of a larger dance, drug, and sex experience and played an important role in the NYC gay nightlife, artistic empowerment, and sexual expression.
Flagging and Fanning as we know it today evolved during the late 70’s at the dance clubs; 12 West & Flamingo and it peeked at the Saint disco during the early 80’s.
It almost completely disappeared during the mid 80’s, because of the AIDS epidemic, but was resurrected in the mid. 90’s.
In 2006, director Wolfgang Busch brought the “House Ball” community, the originators of the dance voguing and the “Flagging” community, the originators of the dance flagging together at the Door youth organization in New York City and created a new dance called “Floguing”, flagging + voguing = floguing and is introducing this new dance in Flow Affair.
